9/15 Homework

165 Students:
Your weekend project is to design a logo for yourself that can be inserted into the beginning of all of your animations. Sketch and ink your work, You can add color in illustrator program next week. Below are samples...

166 Students:
You should be working on your character pages for your key characters. (See sample below)
Note that the charter lines up.

To do this:
1. Draw the front facing character first. Place it on the left hand side of the page.
2. Place a blank sheet of thin copy paper on top of your drawing. Match up the edges of the page so that they are parallel.
3. Using a ruler and your red pencil, draw horizontal lines across the page that line up with key reference points on your character, such as: top of head, chin, stomach, hand, elbow, knee....
4. After you have finished drawing your lines, set the page with the pencil lines off to the side and trace over your lines with a marker.
5. You can now place the lined page under the page with your drawing. You can use the lines that should show up through the page as guide lines when you draw the rest of the character.
6. You need front, 3/4 front, profile, 3/4 back, and back views.

Do not Ink your character pages until I review them with you. I will review your progress on Tuesday.

Character Design

165 Students:
Character design project.
1. In your sketchbook note some of the defining characteristics that you would like to have for your character design.
A. What Species.
B. What basic shape do they represent.
C. Age
D. Name
E. The type of world they live in.

2. In your sketchbook, using only the red pencil, draw a minimum of 12 different characters based on your defining characteristics keep the drawings loose, show the shapes and set up lines. Do not add ink to these drawings.

3. Your goal is to pick one of the characters that you like the most and re-draw that character on a separate page in 12 different styles, (Like the ones shown below. At the end of the process you will choose one style and that will be the one you use it for an animated walk/jump animation.

4. On a full page of your sketchbook draw that final version of your character, show the setup lines and ink. Place the character in a pose that conveys personality.

5. This is Due Tuesday.

6. If you want to get ahead a little, the next step of the process will be to create a character page.

7A proper character page shows the character standing in the same pose, with all of the features lined up, and is shown from the following angles,

Front, 3/4, profile, 3/4 back, back.

This is similar to the sack character page that we created only more complex because this time its a fully developed character.

8. Once the character page is complete, a character spin will be created using the character page drawings. We will be working on this in class next week.

166 Students:
In your watercolor sketchbook, draw one of the characters from your bible project, full body, add watercolor pencil. Experiment by adding black ink pen on top. Try changing the colors of the costume. Remember, one of the goals of the bible project is to not just copy what you see but also allow your self to be inspired, its a cartoon!

*We will look at them in class on Tuesday.

Homework Reading

165 Students:
(This is the Homework for Tuesday, November 3, if you want to get a head start on it, go ahead. We will begin this on Thursday November 5.)

Homework reading, in the Richard Williams text book, read pg. 108-123 and pay particular attention to the diagram in the center of pg. 114 This will prepare you for the walk cycle.

Homework Drawing,
1. In your sketchbook, work on creating a character for the walk cycle. Be prepared to show me 4-6 different variations of the character that will represent you in the walk animation. I will be looking for a simple character design, use animation pencils and no ink. Must be humanoid and look like you, try to avoid oversized capes and long tails.
2. Create a character page on one sheet of paper in the same way that the sack character page was designed. Use animation pencils only, no ink. See example below for the body positions.
(front, 3/4 front, profile, 3/4 back, back)

On Thursday we will look at the pencil versions of your character pages. If they look good you can ink them. After inking, scan and create a character spin, like you with the sack project.

Week 3 Day 10

Today's Homework
165 Students:
Re-Design the DVC Viking. The design of the character must be flexible so that he can look tough in any situation. Think of the Jeannie in Aladdin, our viking can be into sports, computers, cooking or any subject that we teach at DVC.
For tomorrow be ready to show your first draft of the character, full body, ink is optional.

 Sample Viking

166 Students:
Create a cast line up with the characters you will be using in your commercial. Make sure that they are all on one page with the feet at the same level. If you have already done this you may want to start sketching out some backgrounds.
