March 3, Homework
165 Students:
Draw yourself as a 1950's UPA style character. Use your blue pencil to design the basic shape, add the red pencil for detail. No Graphite! and add black ink. No need to color your drawings, show the entire body, full page. We will check them out in class. Have fun!

166 Students:
Thank you for turning in your first character page. Please plan on turning in one, each class day until you have covered all of your main characters. Please place the character page and its spin animatic into the "166 Character Page" folder in scratch.

This animation has a fun jazzy score and a great story.

Yep... the one below is me!
Second, in your sketchbook, use the two remaining photos that we took in class and draw yourself in any style, in the 3/4 pose and the profile. You can draw them side by side on the same page, keep the drawings simple. Begin with a Red or Blue pencil for the setup lines and finish with ink.

166 Students:
Over the next three weeks you will create one animation a week, using 3 different characters, each
displaying different characteristics, something that:
Walks (on four legs),
Flies (No Humming bird, you need to show the wings flapping)
Swims (must display the classic "s" curve).
Over the weekend, in your regular sketchbook, draw 3-4 versions of each type of character.
Pick one of each kind that you like the most, and begin drawing that same character lined up on one sheet of paper from the angles shown below. This is a character page. (Note: the same pose is used for each drawing)
front, 3/4 front, profile, 3/4 back, back.
Please keep them in pencil only, no ink just in case
adjustments to the drawings need to be made. We will work
on them in class on Tuesday. You will work on the second of
the 3 next weekend and the final one the weekend after that.
Have a fun time drawing! see you Tuesday!

1. Character pages of your main characters.
2. Character page showing a line up of supporting characters.
3. Background drawings for each scene.
4. Thumbnail Storyboard.

Homework Notes
165 Students:
For Thursday, be ready to turn in a sketch of the background your character will be walking through. Here are a couple of things to consider as you create it.
1. With your paper turned horizontally, divide the space into thirds. The middle third is the space on the paper were you will draw out the background. This is done so that when you import your background it will be wider than the stage. This will allow you to create a motion tween and have the background move. (See example below)
2. When drawing your background consider the probability that you may need to loop your background. This means you will need to make sure that the height, thickness of line and any object that you place on the left or right of the paper match up. (See example below)
3. Please turn in your sketch only, not the finished artwork. Once I have reviewed it with you, the inking (pen or digital) can be done.
*Below are 3 simple backgrounds, forest, tree line, city skyline.
*Remember do not draw anything in the foreground because your character will occupy that space.
*Reminder: On Thursday we will begin working on the walk cycle.
(See previous post for reading)
166 Students:
After show the walk cycle information to the 165 students I will come to you and review your progress.
