3/7/17 Homework

165 Students:
1. Please add the 4 action poses to the bottom of your character page, pencil only. It's ok to copy some of the poses from the blog.
2. In your sketchbook, on one page, draw 3, 2" x 3" rectangles.
Each rectangle should be a different, pencil only, concept sketch which might serve as a backdrop for your sack jump background, for details on the sack project, go to the top of the blog and tap on the SACK DROP tab.
3. Thursday when you come in we will look at your background ideas.
4. Thursday you will have some time to finish your sack pencil rotation in AN (Adobe Animate)
5. Bring your rulers, white erasers and red pencils, I will demonstrate how to add perspective drawing to your work and share some special tips that focus on animation.
6. Please take a couple of minutes, go to the SACK DROP tab at the top of the blog and read all of the information about the sack drop project, jot down any questions you might have.
7. I will give out grades for the Leaf project.

*Since you are thinking about backgrounds I have included 3 very good videos about storyboarding and the artists that create them. The first two are Dream Works artists and the third is all about Pixar.

166 Students:
On Thursday at the end of class, we will look at your (as close to being fully designed as possible), pencil character page spins.

2/21 Homework

165 Students:
1.  In your sketchbook, full page, using your red or blue pencil, draw yourself as a Charles Schulz style character, full body, add ink using two different pens. Have fun, we will look at them in class on Thursday.
2. If you have not begun creating a studio title card for yourself, rough out a couple of sketches. Think of it as if you owned an animation studio, what would you call it and what would the logo be. Look at
last weeks post for some ideas.

Yep the one below is me!

The collection below is a fun bonus image I had in my collection of Horror icons as Schulz style characters.

166 Students:
1. For Thursday, work on putting together images of the characters and the backgrounds from your chosen movies.
2. Start making some sketches of the characters. As you do, think about the following.

Homework Notes

165 Students:
For Thursday, be ready to turn in a sketch of the background your character will be walking through. Here are a couple of things to consider as you create it.

1. With your paper turned horizontally, divide the space into thirds. The middle third is the space on the paper were you will draw out the background. This is done so that when you import your background it will be wider than the stage. This will allow you to create a motion tween and have the background move. (See example below)

2. When drawing your background consider the probability that you may need to loop your background. This means you will need to make sure that the height, thickness of line and any object that you place on the left or right of the paper match up. (See example below)

3. Please turn in your sketch only, not the finished artwork. Once I have reviewed it with you, the inking (pen or digital) can be done.

*Below are 3 simple backgrounds, forest, tree line, city skyline.
*Remember do not draw anything in the foreground because your character will occupy that space.

*
*Reminder: On Thursday we will begin working on the walk cycle.
(See previous post for reading)

166 Students:
After show the walk cycle information to the 165 students I will come to you and review your progress.

More on Story Boarding for the 166 students

Here is a link to some amazing story boards and animatic studies. It would be worth your time to spend 10 minutes looking them over, they are truly an amazing treasure.

Below are the boards from the earlier Batman opening trailer that I posted.

Homework Reminder

165 Students: On Thursday in your sketchbook be ready to show me a sketch of your backdrop. Remember, do not place any objects into the foreground. The foreground space will be needed for the walk and jump. Here are some sample images.

166 Students: Be ready to show a draft of your story board animatic to the class at 8pm. next Thursday.

Storyboarding

165 students:
You will storyboard the next animation before you animate. Planing out your camera angles is very important to the story telling process. Use the 16 panel page.

166 students:
The 16 panel page is for you to create quick sketches. It's your chance to experiment, storyboards take time, this is how we as animators plan out our story. Once you have decided the camera angles and the types of shots you want, you can then create the final layout onto the 3 panel pages with greater detail. Remember... The 16 panel pages are for the draft version only... No details on them.

For both 165 and 166 students:

Beginning - The images usually establish where the story is taking place, determined through the background and camera angles and framing (long shots to establish the scene, medium shots to give more detail and close-ups for emotional reactions). The beginning may also give information about when the story is happening. Most importantly, the beginning of the film should introduce the main characters- the protagonist, or hero, and sometimes an antagonist (the character or thing that will challenge the hero). Secondary characters may also be introduced in the beginning.

2. Middle - The action that affects the main character will take place in sequences that illustrate what happens to the character
and how he or she reacts to the situation. In a 30 second film, you will have time for only one or two of these event-and-¬response sequences, each one increasing the emotional reaction of the character. This is accomplished first through the animated character poses and expressions and also by cinematics: changing the framing of the camera, the length of the shots and how they are juxtaposed (edited).

3. End - The climax of the story should have the most cinematic intensity in the way the shots are framed, the background is designed, and the character's action is illustrated. As the climax subsides (the denouement), your storyboard should illustrate how the hero has changed as a result of his or her experiences. This change can be a new awareness, outlook, or attitude and can be shown through the character's gesture, expression and movement.

Reminders

165 Students
Homework:
1. Printout a black and white image of a politician and have it ready for class on Thursday.  Make sure the head can be seen clearly and is no smaller than 3" x 5"
2. On a 8 1/2" x  11" sheet of paper, draw a 1 point perspective room, add a door, window, and a shelf on the back wall. Use a sharpie and ruler, the image will be used as a backdrop for the next animation.
3. Most of you finished up the simplified comic strip on the storyboard handout last night, if not... go ahead and work on it,  we will look at them on Thursday.
166 Students
Homework:
1. As you finish you character turns this week,  you will need to start thinking about backgrounds. Create an electronic file with images that can inspire your layouts. Next Tuesday, I would like to see some loose layout sketches. I will be talking more about backgrounds tonight at 7:00 in A106 and on Thursday.

Everyone: See you tonight... I hope you can make it!
